Metro District 101
A Metro District is a local unit of government created to fund public infrastructure for a new development with debt repaid by taxes and/or fees levied only within the new district’s boundaries without burdening the existing taxpayers of that City or County. Public infrastructure can include streets, water, sewer, storm drainage, parks, and other similar improvements.
Metro Districts sometimes get a bad rap in the media. Primarily because they can be abused instead of used as how they were intended. However, a Metro District can be a great benefit to the community by helping foot the cost to the builder for the infrastructure of the community and by keeping home prices down for the buyer.
